and literacy services, with priority on the development and
expansion of quality family literacy and workforce education
programs.

The Virginia
Adult Learning Resource Center strengthens the Virginia
Adult Education and Literacy System through professional
development, resources, communication and collaborative
projects. All Virginia adult education and literacy programs and
organizations are eligible for services.

The Workforce
Improvement Network (WIN), funded by the Office of Adult
Education, is a partnership between James Madison University and
the Virginia Literacy Foundation. WIN encourages and supports
customized basic skill instruction through a network of
affiliated and certified brokers or program developers, training
programs for practitioners and training programs for curriculum
developers.

Workplace
Essential Skills is
a comprehensive, interactive multimedia learning system
available in Virginia through a state license funded jointly by
the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department
of Social Services.

by registering for a Workplace Essential Skills workshop.
Workshops are open to staff of Adult Education and Literacy

Core services
of the Office of Adult Education and
Literacy include
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
instructional programs
that provide basic skills for adults who are performing below
the ninth grade level in reading, writing, computation, and
other basic skills.

Adult Secondary
instructional
programs of the Office of Adult
Education and Literacy
are for individuals who function at the ninth grade level or
higher in reading, writing, and math and include
the Adult High School Diploma, the General Educational
Development (GED) testing program, and the External Diploma
Program.

The Virginia
Workforce Center provides employee
training programs through the multiple funding sources of its
partners and the Workforce Center. Depending on program
qualifications, intensive and training programs may be provided
in the areas of basic skills training, advanced skills training,
on-the-job training and others.

Tech Prep of the
Virginia Community College System prepares students for a highly
skilled technical occupation that allows either direct entry
into the workplace as a qualified technician or continuation
with further education.
