The Bureau of Career and Adult Education, of the Connecticut Department of Education, supports workplace basic skills education in Connecticut.  The Bureau provides information on GED testing, Career Cluster Frameworks, as well as vocational and technical education performance standards.

Resource Materials and Providers

Connecticut Regional Vocational-Technical School System provides full-time post-high school programs, apprentice training and part-time programs for retraining and upgrading skills to adult students.

The Connecticut Literacy Center offers services that foster literacy development from early childhood to adult. Technical assistance and training are available in the areas of Adult Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Workplace Literacy and Adults with Learning Disabilities.

The New England Literacy Resource Center (NELRC) strengthens adult literacy services in New England through sharing and collaborative special projects among State Literacy Resource Centers (SLRC), adult literacy practitioners and policy-makers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program provides Connecticut adults with a second chance to obtain their high school diplomas.  Information about the GED tests, including eligibility, application procedures and testing schedules, is provided by the Bureau of Career and Adult Education.

ADULT ED AT WORK is a network of Connecticut adult education programs that offer on-site educational consultation and instruction to business employees who need to develop skills in reading, writing, math, computers, English as a Second Language, and communication.

The Connecticut Department of Higher Education collects data on Connecticut colleges, universities, and private occupational schools; licenses colleges, universities, and private occupational schools; and manages financial aid as well as community service programs.

Labor Market Information

State labor market information is provided by the Connecticut Department of Labor.  The data, which can assist employers with making better-informed decisions on expansion, investment, hiring, and other aspects of business management, includes information on occupational employment and wages, labor surplus areas and the consumer price index.

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association helps its members develop a skilled workforce. It focuses on public policy issues in education and job training and on the development of model programs under the CBIA Education Foundation.

The Workplace Mentoring Guide, available from the Bureau of Career and Adult Education, is for organizations interested in placing students in work-based learning experiences.  The Guide helps employers establish effective, structured workplace learning experiences for students as they develop career plans.

This report, published by the Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy, compares selected adult basic education program characteristics of community college and non-community college programs in five states. The comparison is based on comparable data collected by CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System).
