Case Studies

Many workplaces have success stories about how developing employees' basic skills have had a positive impact on performance, productivity and profit.

These three examples illustrate what that can mean for your company. If these organizations can benefit, so can yours!

  • Profits at Chicago-based Juno Lighting, an equipment manufacturing company, increased 15 percent through a combination of new technology that brought the per-unit cost down and the increased capacity of WEP-trained employees to use the technology effectively.

  • At Baker Enterprises, a sheet metal fabrication company in Michigan, WEP graduates' skills led to reduced overheads and a requirement for fewer supervisors, and contributed to a 5 percent sales increase that enhanced the bottom line.

  • Seattle's Marriott Hotel noted an improved quality of work amongst employees that participated in WEPs.  As William Fleet, Director of Human Resources, observes: "Before training, quality was a result of luck rather than intention."  Now, Marriott's employees bring a better attitude to the workplace and perform better in their jobs.

The American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC) presents free case studies, articles and reports on measuring the impact of employee learning and on assessing learning outcomes.

PPL Corporation is a Fortune 500 company that markets wholesale or retail energy in 42 states and Canada. PPL designed a customer-service training program that used technology as a tool, not a replacement for other methods. Instead, program delivery methods included instructor-led training with mentors, Web-based self-study, and on-the-job practice.
