The Alaska Human Resource Investment Council (AHRIC) provides policy oversight to the Governor and Legislature regarding state and federally funded job training and vocational education programs. AHRIC brings together public and private sector training providers with employers so that the right people are being trained for the right jobs.

Resource Materials and Providers

The Learning Resources Department provides all AVTEC students with opportunities to improve their mathematics, English, and reading skills in the context of their vocational training and the library and media services to support their studies.  Academic skills are taught as they are applied in the world of work.

The Alaska State Literacy Resource Center, of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, supervises adult basic education for programs across the state.  Local conditions vary greatly, but programs share responsibility for serving those most in need of adult basic education and literacy.

Alaska Tech Prep of the Department of Education and Early Development prepares adults and youth for highly skilled technical occupations.

Community Services for Adult Basic Education are offered to the local community at the Seward Community Learning Center at the First Lake Facility.  Individual instruction in GED preparation, reading, mathematics, writing, ESL and computer literacy is available.

Alyeska Central School (ACS) is the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development’s correspondence school, providing free elementary, secondary and GED instruction to any Alaskan who does not have a high school diploma.

The Northwest Educational Technology Consortium provides professional development opportunities, access to technical assistance and support to encourage educators to use technology. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) project encourages the use of technology in the field of adult literacy, basic skills, and English as a Second Language.

Learning Support

Alaska Vocational Technical Center's (AVTEC) Foundation Skills Program offers support services for anyone who would like to brush up on their math and/or reading skills before starting a training program; or for anyone who is considering training in a field non-traditional for his or her gender.
